Each October between 200 and 300 mountain bikers meet in Farmington, NM to compete in the annual Road Apple Rally. The Road Apple Rally began in 1981 as a competition between horses and bicycles. It has since become a bicycle only race and the longest running annual mountain bike race in the United States.
This celebrated mountain bike race features four divisions: beginner, sport, expert and pro. The beginner/sport course is 15 miles and the expert/pro course is 30 miles. Both courses feature whoops, short climbs, flats, sandy arroyos and sharp corners. Competitors claim the Road Apple Rally is one of the more difficult courses to ride because it takes both endurance and stamina to finish the race.
